Which always makes me laugh a little. Mostly because Mr. Homestead does not in fact enjoy peppers. If I add them to breakfast potatoes or even a simple omelet, he scrunches up his nose. He'll eat it, but not happily.
However, any night pepper steak is on the menu he is all smiles. I guess I can call that a win.
But what really makes this recipe shine is when I can use fresh peppers, onion and garlic from our garden. Our meat is local sourced and always delicious but fresh veggies make it the best recipe for a fall dinner.
What are the best fresh Peppers?
We personally use green or red bell peppers in our recipe for pepper steak and gravy. But if you want to spice it up a bit, feel free to add some jalapenos or other spicy peppers.
If I can, I'll use a variety of colored peppers. Color just adds so much more to a dish and makes it that much more appealing.
Secret to the Best Pepper Steak Sauce
The best part about pepper steak is the yummy gravy sauce that it is simmered in and poured over rice. But what makes this gravy so delicious? The secret is chicken broth. Especially homemade chicken broth.
The flavors from the broth and an extra layer of deliciousness. But if you don't have chicken broth, you can also use a couple cubes of bouillon in hot water.
