'Tis the season for cozy nights, warm fires, and handmade touches! If you're anything like me, and love to create handmade items for the holiday season, then this tutorial is for you.
We're going to dive into creating a beautiful, unique, and incredibly satisfying "Quilt-As-You-Go" quilted Christmas stocking.
- Quilted Stocking Patterns - get the free download
- 2/3 yard muslin fabric
- 2/3 yard cotton holiday fabric - for lining
- 2/3 yard batting
- (40) 1-2" wide strips of fabric
- Thread
Gather those glorious fabric scraps. You'll want strips that are roughly 1 to 1.5 inches wide.
Don't worry about perfect uniformity; the charm of a scrappy quilt is in its imperfection! You'll need a good pile, so dig deep into your scrap bins.
Step 2
Lay out your lining fabric and muslin. Using your stocking pattern, cut two pieces from the muslin and lining.
These will form the base for your quilted stocking front. We're cutting two now, but will trim them down later after quilting to ensure clean edges.
Step 3
Cut out two pieces of batting using the stocking pattern as well.
Take one muslin stocking shape and one batting stocking shape. Layer the batting directly on top of the muslin. This is your foundation.
Now, choose one of your fabric scraps. Place it right side up onto the batting/muslin foundation along the top of the stocking. This will be your first "strip." Pin it in place and stitch across the top of this piece.
Choose your next fabric strip. Place it right sides together with the first strip, aligning one long edge. Stitch them together with a 1/4 inch seam allowance along the bottom edge of the first strip.
Flip the newly added strip open so its right side is facing up. Press the seam flat.
This "Quilt-As-You-Go" technique means you're attaching the strip, and then essentially quilting it down by pressing and moving to the next strip.
Continue adding strips in this manner, working your way out from the center strip. Sew a strip, flip it open, and press. Repeat this process until one side of your stocking foundation is completely covered with fabric scraps.
Repeat this process with the backside of your stocking. This is optional. You can just quilt one side of the stocking if you wish.
Once both of your muslin/batting foundations are completely covered with scraps and pressed, it's time to refine their shape. Lay your stocking pattern over each quilted piece and carefully cut around the pattern. Now you have two perfectly shaped quilted stocking fronts!
Remember to mirror your stocking pattern if both sides of your stocking will be quilted.
Place a quick basting stitch all the way around the quilted stocking pieces to keep the fabrics in place for the next steps.
Place your two quilted stocking pieces right sides together. Pin all around the edges, leaving the top opening unpinned.
Stitch with a 1/4 from one top edge all the way around to the other.
Repeat this step with the two lining pieces. Leave a 3" opening on one side of the lining for turning later.
Clip your curves to help the seams lay flat.
From a scrap of your lining fabric or a coordinating sturdy fabric, cut a strip approximately 2 inches wide and 8-10 inches long. Fold this strip in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch along the raw edge to create a tube. Turn the tube right side out and press it flat. This will be your hanging loop.
Turn the main stocking right side out. Slide the main stocking into the lining.
Tuck the loop between the two layers need the side seam and pin in place.
Stitch the lining, loop and main fabric together around the top of the stocking. You'll place the stocking opening around the arm of your sewing machine and sew the main stocking and lining together. It should sew a full circle.
Step 16
Pull the stocking right side out through the opening in the lining. Stitch the opening closed with a whipstitch or slipstitch.
